South Asian agriculture increasingly dependent on meltwater and groundwater

چکیده

Irrigated agriculture in South Asia depends on meltwater, monsoon rains and groundwater. Climate change alters the hydrology causes shifts timing, composition magnitude of these sources water supply. Simultaneously, socio-economic growth increases demand. Here we use a high-resolution cryosphere–hydrology–crop model forced with an ensemble climate projections to assess how irrigation supply may shift during twenty-first century. We find importance meltwater groundwater for irrigated agriculture. An earlier melt peak withdrawal at onset cropping season May June Indus, whereas increasing demand July August aggravates non-renewable pumping Indus Ganges despite runoff increases. Increasing inter-annual variability rainfall need complement future dry years. Asian from rains, groundwater, but impacts timing sources’ availability. Projections indicate that will become more important offset reduced drier

Groundwater pumping and spatial externalities in agriculture

We investigate the behavior of farmers who share an underground aquifer. In the case where seepage may occur the resource is nonexclusive, giving rise to a spatial externality whereby pumping by one user affects others nearby. Theoretically, these externalities are potentially important causes of welfare loss. Using a unique spatial data set of groundwater users in western Kansas, we are able t...
